New York radio host trashes 'disgusting' Phillies fans

WFAN host Evan Roberts was in Citizen Bank Park Sunday for the New York Mets’ 7-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the NLCS and Philly fans apparently lived up to the expectation he had going in.

“They were so disgusting, and such awful human beings,” Roberts said on Monday’s Evan & Tiki show . “Imagining them celebrating a championship actually pains me.”

As for what Phillies fans did to attract such ire, he did not say.

Roberts said that the actions of Phillies fans during the game made him think about doing the once-unthinkable: Rooting for the Yankees in a World Series.

“If there is a Yankees/Phillies, World Series, that would be weeks away. That’s time to let the wounds heal. That’s time to remind myself that I never have to go back into that disgusting city,” he added. “But as of right now, did my experience make it more likely that I would root for the Yankees in a Yankees/Phillies World Series? Oh hell yeah.”

Roberts discussed how he attended the game with his family and found himself second-guessing that decision as soon as the Mets raced out to a 3-0 lead, potentially taking a 2-0 series lead.

“I’m thinking to myself, ‘How are we gonna get out of here alive if the Mets win?’” Evan said . “I actually thought that the Phillies winning was beneficial to us getting out of there in one piece.”

It’s unclear if the Mets winning would have been worse for him than what actually happened, with Nick Castellanos driving in a walk-off run in the bottom of the 9th to even the series at one apiece.

In the end, Roberts felt that Phillies fans lived up to his expectations, for better or worse.

“They were everything you’d expect,” Evan said. “I’ll give Philly that. Everything that you believe they are, they are.

“I did go to two Nets/Sixers playoff games, and I didn’t feel anything close to the level of disgust I felt last night. It wasn’t even on the same planet in terms of how they acted.”

We’re sure this will lead to some rational, productive dialogue between Mets and Phillies fans.
