If you enjoy watching sad, angry, and stunned sports fans come to grips with an unexpected season-ending loss, Philadelphia-area media was the place to look Wednesday night.

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1, to clinch their NLDS series. The Mets are moving on to the NLCS, while the Phillies, whose fans had such high hopes this season, are going home. It didn’t help matters for those fans that the Phillies held a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning before Mets star Francisco Lindor’s grand slam changed everything.

It was a thrilling moment … unless you happened to be a Phillies fan.

There were plenty of dazed, sad Phillies fans to be found in Philly Wednesday night. WFMZ-TV 69 News found an interesting sample of them who agreed to share their feelings. One young woman compared the loss to her dog dying.

“So there’s a couple of low points in my life,” Courtney O’Neill said. “My dog passing away and them hitting a grand slam. The grand slam took the cake.

“I feel like I might either check into AA, therapy, or an institute of some sort. because this is crap, it’s full of crap.”

Another fan, identified as Montana Chambers, said she evacuated from Hurricane Milton, driving to Philadelphia, although her driving schedule sounded off.

“I evacuated from the hurricane six or seven hours ago, I drove 21 hours up here, and my Phillies (lost). I don’t know what else to say,” she said.

Then there were the two fans who watched the game wearing Phillies overalls.

“We’re fed up. We’re fed up. We had such high expectations,” Colton Christie said.

“I’ve already hit the fifth stage of grievance, which is acceptance,” fellow overall-wearer Jack Delvecchio said. “Acceptance that this team will not win for the next five years, probably.”

It’s bad to make snap judgments in these situations, but many Phillies fans were in that kind of dark mood after Wednesday’s stunning loss.
