Throughout the 2024-25 NHL season, New York Rangers play-by-play man Sam Rosen will certainly receive his share of tributes. One of those came seconds before the start of Saturday’s game between the Rangers and Utah Hockey Club.

It was announced in August that Rosen will retire after this season. As such, Saturday’s game at Madison Square Garden was the final home opener of Rosen’s career. Just before he dropped the puck to start the game, referee Wes McCauley pointed to Rosen. Rosen’s partner, Joe Micheletti, directed his attention to it and explained the full tribute.

“Sam, let’s take a look down at the opening faceoff, will you? That’s Wes McCauley, who’s pointing at you. You know why? Because he appreciates your years. There it is. Your 40th season, Sam, and everybody loves you. By the way, they’re gonna take that puck, and after the first whistle they’re gonna take it out of play and it’s gonna go to you.”

Rosen was appreciative and brought up John McCauley, Wes’ late father who was also an NHL referee.

“Thank you,” Rosen said. “That’s unbelievable. That’s just great. And I thank Wes McCauley and everyone involved. Wes is one of the great people — great officials — in sports. And I’m just proud to know him. Knew his dad. Saw his dad officiate. Wes has just — he’s gone above and beyond.”
