    Montage foreshadows big MNF play

In his time with the Green Bay Packers, quarterback Aaron Rodgers developed a knack for throwing successful Hail Marys. In Week 6’s Monday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills, Rodgers threw his first Hail Mary as quarterback of the New York Jets.

And the timing could hardly have been better.

With eight seconds left in the first half, Rodgers and the Jets trailed 20-10 and had the ball just short of midfield. A time-out gave the opportunity to show a montage of three successful Hail Mary passes that Rodgers completed with the Packers. The first was in 2015, which gave the Packers a last-second win over the Detroit Lions. The next Hail Mary came in that year’s playoffs, when Rodgers completed one against the Arizona Cardinals. Finally, there was a Hail Mary thrown against the New York Giants during the following year’s playoffs.

The broadcast then returned to a live shot of Monday’s game. Analyst Troy Aikman foreshadowed what was about to happen more by noting that the Bills “We’re only gonna rush two. So he should have time to let his guys get down the field.”

That’s exactly what happened. Rodgers dropped back and briefly moved around in the pocket before launching the ball to the end zone. Allen Lazard went up for the ball and came down to the ground with a sea of players around him. When the ball popped out, one of the officials called the pass incomplete, as did play-by-play man Joe Buck. That quickly changed.

“And now the other official is saying touchdown,” Buck said. “One said incomplete. The other says touchdown. And now the officials get together.”

A replay was then shown, which caused Buck to realize that Rodgers had just thrown his fourth successful Hail Mary.

“He’s got it,” Buck said. The official then announced that it was a touchdown. Buck added, “Good call, touchdown Jets.”

“Wow. Great call by one official overruling the other. That is a touchdown. It is confirmed. And that is the fourth Hail Mary for a touchdown in Rodgers’ career. And you’ve seen all four.”
