Will Tom Brady make personnel moves for Raiders?

Tom Brady is slowly growing into his new role as an NFL on Fox analyst. After signing a 10-year, $375 million contract, all eyes were on Brady and his television debut this season. But of course, he’s not stopping there when it comes to his post-playing career.

Brady’s minority ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders was finally approved by NFL owners on Tuesday. But while it might have been thought that Brady’s stake in the team was purely an investment ploy or a figurehead move, a new report by Vincent Bonsignore from the Las Vegas Review-Journal says that’s not the case.

Instead, a league source tells the Review-Journal that Brady will have “a much bigger role than people think” in charting the future path of the organization and its play on the field.

If Tom Brady’s long pursuit of a minority ownership share of the Raiders is approved as expected, the former NFL star quarterback is anticipated to have a prominent voice in the team’s football operation.

NFL owners will meet Tuesday in Atlanta, and among the items on their agenda is Brady’s bid to purchase 10 percent of the Raiders. Twenty-four of the 32 owners must approve the sale, but that’s expected to be a formality.

“I think Tom is going to have a much bigger role than people think in the direction of the franchise in all areas on the football side,” a league source said.

But, as a league source indicated, it’s less about how much of the team Brady is buying and more about Davis’ respect for Brady, who also owns a share of the Aces, Davis’ WNBA franchise.

“It doesn’t matter what percentage he owns. It’s the percentage that the owner entrusts him to advise and help make football decisions,” a league source said. “And I think Mark will give him a long leash with that.”

The idea is also floated that Brady could be an eventual successor to primary owner Mark Davis when the time comes for a transition with the Raiders franchise given Davis has no children. Would Brady use his NFL on Fox job as a placeholder until becoming an NFL owner? Fifteen years from now is it too far-fetched that Tom Brady and LeBron James could both on pro teams in Las Vegas?

Brady advising the team in making football decisions for the Raiders is a whole different scenario than merely being a passive investor. And if that’s the case, it may show why there was such a furor around his ability to do behind the scenes interviews with other teams as part of his NFL on Fox job. Other teams could see Brady in the facility and wonder if he’s there to do background work for Fox or if he’s scouting for the team that he partially owns.

While Brady having limited access shouldn’t realistically have too much of an effect on his broadcast job, it does bring another wrinkle to his on-air work if he’s actively involved in making personnel decisions. Could you imagine Jerry Jones calling games? Actually, maybe that would be totally worth it just for the meltdown factor alone.
