Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was in no mood on Tuesday to discuss the shortcomings of his team, pushing back against questions from a local radio host by threatening his job. And later in the day, Jones tried his best to explain his reasoning for the contentious interaction.

During Jones’ weekly appearance on the 105.3 The Fan show Shan & RJ , Jones was asked by Shan Shariff about the team’s lack of activity this offseason.

It’s a question that Jones has already been asked numerous times this season, particularly after their loss to the Baltimore Ravens and star running back Derrick Henry, who the team was linked to throughout much of the offseason.

This time around, Jones was defensive about his decisions this offseason, largely deflecting the question and saying that he will “get somebody else to ask these questions” that perhaps won’t ask him these type of questions.

“Let me tell you what I’ll do about it. I will let us sit down and look at the decisions we’ve made over the last several years,” Jones said. “Now, if you think I’m interested on a damn phone call with you over a radio and sitting here and throwing all the good out with the dishwater, you have got to be smoking something over there this morning.

“This is not your job. Your job isn’t to let me go over all the reasons that I did something and I’m sorry that I did it. That’s not your job. I’ll get somebody else to ask these questions.”

Jones then made it clear that his comment about “getting someone else” was no empty threat.

“I’m not kidding. I’m not kidding,” Jones declared. “You’re not gonna figure out what the team is doing right or wrong. If you are, or any five or 10 like you, you need to come to this [NFL owners] meeting I’m going to today. There are 32 teams here. You’re geniuses. Y’all really think you’re gonna sit here with a microphone and tell me all of the things that I’ve done wrong without going over the rights?”

Given the team’s struggles, particularly in the running game where the team neglected to bring in anyone this offseason except for Ezekiel Elliott, it was more than fair for Shan Shariff to ask Jones about the offseason decision making.

Regardless, Jones clearly didn’t have much interest in reflecting on the offseason mistakes of his organization.

Later on in the day, Jones took part in an exclusive interview with Dianna Russini of The Athletic to share his reasoning for the threat to Shariff, stating that he “doesn’t need” to hear criticism from “people he is paying”.

“I don’t know that I would go as far as (calling) the volume connotation as yelling,” Jones told Russin i. “Okay? But the facts are that if I’m going to be grilled by the tribunal, I don’t need it to be by the guys I’m paying. I can take it from fans and take it from other people. I take a lot of pride in how fair and how much I try to work with the media, we’re brothers and sisters. But I was a little frustrated there today.

“We got in there as of accounting for decisions made in the offseason. OK? They might as well gone back to decisions made in 2010. My point is, and that’s from my perspective, there’s no question, I’m sure, that they would have liked to have grilled me like the fans are thinking, what are you going to do about that? I get it. I get all of that. And really will go along with it.”

105.3 The Fan is the radio home of The Dallas Cowboys, and have had weekly access to Jones, along with access to others within the Cowboys organization. At a moment’s notice, Jones could take that access away if he so wishes. So in a sense, he certainly has a ton of power as to who is interviewing him weekly.

In a reply on social media, Shan Shariff made it clear that Jones does not pay him and that he plans on sharing his full thought on Jones’ follow-up explanation on his show Wednesday.

“Is this real life??? I WISH Jerry Jones paid me,” wrote Shariff on X . “He insults us again and we’ve had back and forth over WAY bigger things in our 14 years. I truly don’t understand what the h*** is going on. Full thoughts tomorrow morning.”

It’s quite clear that Jones is looking more for a “yes man” than someone who is actually asking questions that listeners really care about. But unfortunately for him, the criticism for the Cowboys organization has reached a national scale .
