Early on in the NBA career of Bronny James, he has received a ton of criticism from sports media personalities who feel he may not deserve where he has gotten to. And perhaps nobody is more involved in the Bronny James bashing than longtime SiriusXM host Chris Russo.
After Bronny’s NBA debut, Russo made it a point to call the moment “fake” during Wednesday’s edition of First Take , arguing that the three minutes he took the floor for were largely meaningless aside from the Bronny-LeBron storyline.
Russo further expanded on this during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show on Thursday. But this time, he used his own son to criticize Bronny.
Much like LeBron James, Russo also has a son, Colin Russo, attempting to break into the industry he has helped make famous. But Russo believes that his son is doing a far better job of it than Bronny James is.
After Dan Patrick brought up the similarities between Russo and LeBron due to their sons’ each venturing into their parent’s respective industries, Chris Russo tried his best not to compare his son Colin to Bronny, but was eventually coaxed into it by Patrick.
“I’ll say this right now… Well, I won’t say that because that will get me in trouble,” Russo said.
“Your wife’s out of town. You can’t get in trouble,” Patrick replied.
“I’ll say it, I’ll say it. Colin, from a radio perspective, he is better at what he does right now than Bronny is with what he does. How’s that? I’ll say that with all sorts of confidence.”
This kind of statement actually doesn’t come off that poorly from Chris Russo’s perspective. Any good father would likely say the same thing about their son. Especially considering his stance on Bronny James is already well-documented at this point.
However, the comment forced Colin Russo, whose radio career is just getting started after landing a gig on an afternoon drive radio show alongside Mike Rizzo at ESPN West Palm .
Colin Russo opened Friday’s show by addressing his father’s comments, saying Chris Russo was “baited like a child” by Dan Patrick into making the comparison.
“So, we’re gonna have to address the elephant in the room,” said Colin Russo. “Because apparently, egos are taking shots here before the weekend ends. That’s where I stand. The Bronny James of sports radio. Or not. Everybody’s got their own opinion on that. Apparently we’re already judging legacies. A little early. For those who don’t know, I don’t love leaning into this always but we’re gonna have to do it. My father, Christopher Russo, went on The Dan Patrick Show and was baited like a child into giving an answer about the idea that Bronny is getting opportunities because of who LeBron is.
“Dan Patrick asked him complete bait. ‘Well, what if your son was given a huge opportunity with SiriusXM or ESPN TV. Would that be considered under the same umbrella?’ And the way he responded. He said ‘I’m not gonna say it’. And for some reason, Dan Patrick saying ‘You’re not going to get in trouble, your wife isn’t home…’ For some reason that worked. He says Colin Russo is better at radio than Bronny James is at basketball.
“Listen, you can have your own opinion on Bronny and his ability as a player and whether you think he is worthy of being in that Lakers spot or getting drafted. Whatever you may say. Bronny James is in the NBA. This is a crazy… It’s not like I said this. It’s not like I was the one who had these opinions. But now, all of the sudden, I am looped into this. Where everything I have ever said about Bronny. And it hasn’t been positive, let’s put it that way. I feel like now I’m looped in with this.”
Russo went on to say that his father, Chris Russo, put him in “a tough spot” with his comments. Which truthfully is the understatement of the century considering it is now a national story.
Colin Russo is likely well-adjusted to the crazy takes from his father over the years. But this has to be the first take from his father to affect him professionally, which has to be a very weird feeling.
