Four people were killed and nine others hospitalized after a shooting at a Georgia high school on Wednesday morning, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has confirmed.

The latest: Authorities said the first call about an active shooter at Apalachee High School in Winder — about an hour northeast of Atlanta — came in at around 9:30am.

    • The GBI said in a post on X that those who were injured were transported to "various hospitals" to be treated.
    • The agency also said media reports that the shooter was "neutralized" are inaccurate, and that the suspect is alive and in custody.

What they're saying: "Obviously, what you see behind us is a evil thing," Barrow County Sheriff's Office Jud Smith said, standing in front of the school at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Zoom out: Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement that he's directed all available state resources to help with the incident and urged "all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state."

    • Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement that police chief Darin Schierbaum is in contact with the Atlanta Public Schools Police Department to boost patrols around schools "out of an abundance of caution."
    • President Biden was also briefed by the Homeland Security advisor on the situation, White House senior deputy press secretary Emilie Simons said in a post on X .

Both the GBI and the FBI Atlanta Division said that their agents are assisting in the investigation.

What's next: Another press conference is set for 4pm.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
