Gwinnett schools considering clear backpacks for students

Wednesday is the deadline for parents to provide feedback on a Gwinnett County Public Schools' proposal to require clear backpacks for students.

Why it matters: The district, which is the largest in Georgia with about 182,000 students, said in a press release that the proposal is one of several measures it is undertaking to improve campus security.

    • For example, school officials late last month announced the district would begin using an advanced weapons detection system at stadiums.

The big picture: Many U.S. school districts, including in Richmond, Virginia and across Texas, implemented an umbrella policy requiring the clear backpacks to prevent school shootings.

    • Others like Flint, Michigan, banned backpacks altogether.

How it works: Under the proposal, the district would supply the clear bags at no cost for the rest of the school year.

    • Students could also use clear backpacks that align with the policy.
    • Students will be allowed to non-clear bags for personal items, such as phones, hygiene products and money, that measure no more than 6 inches by 9 inches.

Zoom out: Clayton and Rockdale counties also have clear backpack policies.

What's next: Gwinnett parents can take the survey on the district's website .
