Enter another world at Austin's Tiny Minotaur

There exists a place in Austin where you can listen to a goblin bard, pay for your drinks in silver coins and wander through a garden with fountains and gothic stone arches.

The big picture: The Tiny Minotaur , which opened in November, is like another world tucked within an outdoor bar on East Cesar Chavez.

    • The creators describe it as a "home-brewed immersive fantasy world," live-action mini-theater, tavern and "dungeon synth venue."

The vibe: Imagine a small, permanent Renaissance festival on the same stretch of road that holds La Barbecue and Lustre Pearl.

    • It's a 21-and-up bar like you'd expect, but the staff is dressed up — and patrons are encouraged to join them — and it hosts LARPs (live-action role-plays), Dungeons and Dragons nights and fantasy karaoke, among other things.

How it works: You can buy a day pass ($15 per person or $40-80 for a group of four to eight) and visit one time, or you can join the Tiny Minotaur's private club on Patreon.

    • The main membership tier is called Tavern Nob ($20 a month) and gets you free entry to the tavern and access to events, plus the option to bring a guest when you visit.
    • The bar also has its own currency — the exchange rate is one silver coin, called a horn, for $3. Drinks typically cost two or three horns.
    • Plus, there's a food truck with food like meat pies and macaroni and cheese, so you can stay in the fantasy even if you get hungry.

The intrigue: As if a membership-based fantasy world isn't enough, the owners also created a player-versus-player card game that you can play and buy at the bar.

    • It involves character classes and a 20-sided die but isn't so complicated you can't enjoy it with a couple of cocktails like the Golden Wyvern (three horns) or the Blood of the Rat King (three horns).
    • We borrowed the game from an orc at the front entrance named Oakda Malkuth, of course.

Go deeper: The immersion is so deep that there's a map and written lore about the bar — described as a hub for adventurers and fugitives in a fantasy world called Karth. If you want to know more, there is a 112-page manual on the bar's website (lore starts on page 40).

    • The manual also includes the bar's rules and explains that if you're thinking of inviting someone, they should pass the "cape test," which gauges their reaction to being asked to spontaneously put on a cape.

Yes, but: The venue is fully outdoors right now (with an indoor expansion planned to open soon), and sometimes it closes due to dangerous heat. Make sure to check the Tiny Minotaur's Instagram before you go.

    📍 If you go: 2701 E. Cesar Chavez St. Open 8pm-1am Tuesday-Saturday.
