Matt Damon wants a statue of Robin Williams in Boston

Matt Damon wants to put a statue of the late Robin Williams at the spot where they filmed a famous scene from "Good Will Hunting."

Why it matters: The actor said in an interview with the YouTuber Jake Hamilton that an artist wants to make a bronze statue of Williams a permanent addition to the lagoon area of the garden.

What they're saying: "The idea being that if you feel alone you can go sit next to him, which I think is the coolest idea. It would be like the most beautiful installation and like such a tribute to that guy, who I think would've loved that," Damon said in the interview alongside "The Instigators" co-star and fellow Cantabrigian Casey Affleck.

• "I hope it comes to pass. I hope they let this artist do it because it would be pretty cool," Damon added.

The scene from the 1997 film, written by Damon and Ben Affleck, includes Williams' speech about life experiences outside of Boston while sitting on a bench in the Public Garden.

The catch: Municipal red tape might stop the statue even before it can be cast.

• The city has a moratorium in place for all new memorials in the Public Garden or on Boston Common, according to Lynn Page Flaherty from the Friends of the Public Garden, the nonprofit group that advocates for the city's oldest green spaces.
• The bench is also already dedicated in memory to another person, which presents a problem for the effort to honor Williams.
