Why Massachusetts' auditor is walking from the Berkshires to Boston

State auditor Diana DiZoglio is on a mission to see inside the financial books of the Legislature, an odyssey that's bringing her from one side of the state to another — on foot.

Why it matters: Getting out the vote in a campaign is called the "ground game." As DiZoglio works to pass Question 1 , she's covering a lot of ground — literally walking from the Berkshires to Boston.

Catch up quick: Question 1 is asking voters to grant DiZogio's office powers to audit and oversee some of the General Court's spending and make sure lawmakers are complying with training rules, cybersecurity standards and purchasing practices.

    • Legislative leaders say they already get audited by an outside firm and involving the state auditor would be unconstitutional.

State of play: A September poll from MassINC shows Question 1 with 70% support from likely voters.

Zoom in: DiZoglio isn't just the spokesperson for Question 1, she's basically the whole campaign. Raising funds in support of the ballot measure has been difficult, according to the auditor, because donors say they're afraid of retaliation from lawmakers.

    • Hence, the "sunshine tour."
    • "I'm wearing yellow down to the nail polish," DiZoglio told Axios from the road Tuesday.

Her path: DiZoglio set off from Great Barrington on Oct. 4 on the first leg of the trek: a 17-mile stretch to Otis.

    • The next day, she headed another 18 miles to Westfield.
    • Then she passed through Springfield, East Brimfield, Worcester and Westborough, traveling about 18 miles per leg.

Where you'll bump into her: At the end of each day, the Auditor has been hosting "sips and sunshine mixers" at pubs, country clubs, cultural centers and restaurants.

    • On Thursday, DiZoglio plans to walk to Wellesley.

What's next: Friday, she'll end her trip on Beacon Hill at the State House and will host one last mixer in the Seaport — a party for supporters at Moxies on Congress Street, across from the Pavilion, at 6pm.

The bottom line: Unlike the megabuck campaign ads about the MCAS and tipped wage questions, DiZoglio's tour is a no-frills way to promote her ballot question.

    • That's fitting for DiZoglio, who's built a reputation as a do-it-herself Democrat constantly at odds with the powers that be on Beacon Hill.
