Boston's hurricane help for displaced pets

Boston animal rescuers are ramping up efforts to save pets who've been hit by the country's recent round of hurricanes .

Why it matters: The MSPCA, the state's top rescue group, says thousands of pets, strays and sheltered animals are threatened by Hurricane Milton , which just barreled into Florida.

Driving the news: The MSPCA has teams ready to deploy to Florida when safe to do so.

    • The group sent personnel to Tennessee and North Carolina earlier this month to help rescue animals left homeless by Hurricane Helene.

🐶 They brought 24 dogs from Chattanooga-areas shelters to Salem and helped rescue 80 dogs and cats from an Ashville shelter that was completely destroyed by Helene.

What they're saying: "These are two historic storms. That unfortunately means a lot of animals' lives will be in danger," MSPCA-Angell Vice President of Animal Protection Mike Keiley told Axios.

    • Keiley said the best way for New Englanders to help is to adopt pets already in Massachusetts to free up kennel space for newcomers.
    • The organization is also looking for foster families, donations and volunteers to pitch in for workers sent to disaster areas.
