Developer makes improvements to Rail Trail

A popular portion of the Rail Trail in South End , between Tremont Avenue and Remount Road, is closing Monday for construction.

Why it matters: Of the more than 2,000 people on the Rail Trail daily, many headed to Sycamore Brewing and other South End businesses will have to detour temporarily.

    • Most of the trail will reopen on Thursday, July 18. A small portion in front of Linea, an incoming luxury apartment tower on Hawkins Street, will stay closed through the summer. The project should take eight weeks, a spokesperson for developer Portman Holdings said.
    • Signs will reroute people to the open trail.

Between the lines: Portman is constructing the improvements "to create a seamless connection" from Linea to the Rail Trail, a CATS spokesperson tells Axios.

    • The upgrades include fencing, ballast curb, landscaping, lighting and bike racks.
    • Construction is wrapping up at Linea this summer. It will be a 22-stories, 370 units and include 18,000 square feet of retail, next to The Line office building.

Zoom out: Because of all the development in the vicinity, CATS is also designing a new light rail station between the New Bern and East/West stations.

    • CATS says it will help stop illegal pedestrian crossings.
