A massive sinkhole closed a street near Bank of America Stadium Tuesday morning, Axios' news partners at WBTV report.

Why it matters: There's no word on how the roadway collapsed.

Context: The pit-like hazard was discovered along South Cedar Street., near the intersection with W. Morehead Street.

    • South Cedar Street runs behind the Carolina Panthers practice fields and Johnson & Wales University.
    • Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the road is expected to be closed for an extended period of time and are directing traffic .

The latest: Charlotte Water said after the water line is repaired, the hole will be filled in with new soil. Then Charlotte DOT will repave and reopen the road. This may take multiple days.

Zoom out: Charlotte FC hosts Cruz Azul tonight at 8pm at Bank of America Stadium and a lot off Cedar Street is a primary tailgating spot for fans.

    • The Panthers are also in the midst of training camp at their practice fields.
