Study ranks Charlotte as one of rudest cities in U.S.

Charlotte ranks as one of the rudest cities in the country, according to a new study from language education platform Preply .

Why it matters: Charlotteans are sickeningly nice, priding ourselves on southern hospitality and welcoming transplants into our fold. And for those reasons, this study is bologna.

What they found: The study , which ranks Miami as the No. 1 rudest city and Charlotte the 10th, surveyed Americans across the country.

    • They asked an undisclosed number of people "a variety of questions regarding rude behaviors" — on very subjective topics lack of self-awareness, talking on speakerphone in a shared space and not acknowledging strangers, to name a few.
    • They applied scores to responses and adjusted those scores on a scale of 0 to 10.

The rudest cities, according to the study are:

    1. Miami, FL
    2. Philadelphia, PA
    3. Tampa, FL
    4. Louisville, KY
    5. Oakland, CA
    6. Boston, MA
    7. Memphis, TN
    8. Las Vegas, NV
    9. Long Beach, CA
    10. Charlotte, NC

Zoom in: You might be wondering 'Where does New York stand?' It's No. 21 (insert eye roll).

The intrigue: Preply did the same study in 2022 and Charlotte ranked 15th. Philly took the No. 1 spot and NYC stood at No. 3.

The bottom line: How does one measure rudeness anyway? Maybe Charlotteans are getting ruder, or maybe we're getting an influx of transplants from not-so-nice cities.

My thought bubble: As a Charlotte transplant from Miami, I did take this survey as a personal attack. Putting that aside, Charlotteans are some of the nicest people I've ever met and it's one of my favorite reasons to call this place home.
