Chicago restaurants hope DNC will boost traffic, despite RNC lag

Despite disappointing business at some Milwaukee eateries during last week's Republican National Convention, many Chicago restaurateurs remain optimistic that next month's DNC will boost traffic, or at least won't hurt it.

Why it matters: One analysis of the DNC's economic impact on Philadelphia in 2016 suggests promised benefits were overblown — and in Milwaukee, some restaurateurs say revenue actually dropped.

What they're saying: Some business owners told the New York Times the RNC boosted crowds but discouraged regulars. Cheraty Par of an Awi Sushi location near the convention said, "Most of my customers are the people who work around here, so I think they are working remotely."

The other side: "We remain optimistic," Sam Toia, president of the Illinois Restaurant Association, tells Axios.

    • "Recent political news around the nomination should create a once-in-a-generation atmosphere, which could translate to greater enthusiasm and impact."

What we're hearing: We expect "a bump in convention-related business from out-of-towners" but "a quiet week for visits from our locals and regulars," R.J. Melman of Lettuce Entertain You tells Axios, echoing sentiments from other restaurant groups.

Behind the scenes: The DNC and Secret Service have been working with businesses and residents inside the potential security zone to help minimize disruptions during the Aug. 19-22 convention.

    • "From day one, the [DNC] Host Committee has worked tirelessly to ensure businesses and individuals across the city understood the impacts of, and could reap the benefits from, hosting" the convention, a DNC spokesperson tells Axios.
    • Yes but : The Secret Service lost its director this week amid criticism about the recent assassination attempt on former president Trump.

Reality check: Although the DNC expects about 50,000 attendees, the numbers pale compared with the 100,000-plus expected for Lollapalooza next month or the International Manufacturing Technology Show at McCormick Place in September.

    • Still, those events won't attract the DNC's high-profile visitors and international scrutiny that could shape perceptions of the city for decades.

What's next: Today officials plan to unveil the convention's security perimeter near the United Center and McCormick Place.
