The American Institute of Architects' Chicago chapter honored local architects last week for their work on designs worldwide.

Why it matters: The awards recognize excellence in architectural practice and elements of sustainability and equity in projects ranging from renovating a Wicker Park workers' cottage to affordable housing in an historic high-rise.

The intrigue: The institute awarded Linda Searl, founding principal of Searl Lamaster Howe, the Lifetime Achievement Award for her commitment to building affordable housing in Chicago and mentoring younger architects.

    • Some of Searl's designs include UCAN City Campus, Offices & Youth Living and Hale Elementary, School Remodel & Addition.
