Glow Recipe founders to teach master skin care class in Chicago

The founders of skin care company Glow Recipe are coming to Chicago to teach master skin classes this weekend.

Why it matters: Co-founders Sarah Lee and Christine Chang say Western skin care is often only about repair and results, while their products are built around Korean principles that skin care is a daily, joyful ritual for self-care.

Flashback: Lee and Chang met while working in product development for L'Oréal.

    • The friends started their own company after bonding over memories of watching their mothers' and grandmothers' skin care routines in Korea. They remember going to public bathhouses and using natural products like milk on their skin.

The intrigue: Glow Recipe is not part of the popular "K-Beauty" trend , the founders say, as the company is not based in Korea and its products aren't currently sold there.

Zoom in: Glow Recipe's watermelon glow sleeping mask was the company's first product, inspired by Lee and Chang's grandmothers rubbing watermelon rind on their skin to soothe heat rash.

    • "Fruit is efficacy, and it's just this antioxidant-packed rich, superfood that fascinates us," Chang tells Axios. "We always combine this with clinically effective ingredients."

What they're saying: "We don't want people to not look forward to using skincare because it's not enjoyable or the texture is just not there, it smells too strong, it's harsh on the skin," Lee says.

What's next: The masterclass on Oct. 12 at the Wellsley in River North is sold out, but there is a waitlist and a virtual class on Oct. 23 .
