The Dallas Mavericks and DFW Airport are about to enter a new era — both of their CEOs announced Tuesday that they will retire from their roles.

Why it matters: Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall is the only black female CEO in the history of the NBA.

    • Under CEO Sean Donohue's leadership, DFW Airport became one of the world's busiests airports and North America's first carbon-neutral airport .

The intrigue: Marshall and Donohue both have careers spanning over 40 years and are key fixtures in their industries.

The airport: Donohue has been DFW Airport's CEO for 11 years and co-chairs the World Economic Forum's Aviation and Aerospace Committee.

The basketball team: After over 30 years at Dallas-based AT&T, Marshall was running a consulting firm specializing in DEI and leadership when Mark Cuban cold-called her in 2018 about the Mavericks CEO role. He wanted her to help the Mavericks franchise with inclusion and diversity.

Between the lines: The Mavericks began preseason play this week and start the regular season later this month.

What's next: Marshall will retire as CEO on Dec. 31 and move into a consultant role for the Mavs through December 2025, per NBC5 .

    • Donohue will retire next year and plans to help the airport transition to its next CEO. Airport officials said they will conduct a global search to fill the position.
