End of the X2: All of the Metro bus routes are being rebranded

Goodbye, the X2 : Metro is redesigning its regional bus network with a proposal for 123 new routes — and rebranded bus lines.

Why it matters: Metro promises "improved service, especially during evenings and on weekends" with the overhaul, in addition to "more efficient bus stop spacing" … and new names for all the routes.

State of play: The proposed routes and names can be viewed online now. WMATA is asking the public to weigh in .

    • Under the plan, the first character of D.C. routes will be either "D" or "C."

That means no more infamous X2 line . Or the decades-old 30 bus lines that go down Wisconsin Avenue. (Route 30 was a streetcar line stretching into the early 20th century.)

    • Buses serving those areas would get rebranded. For example, the 16th Street corridor would be served by D6X and D62 routes.
    • H Street would gain the D2X, D22, and C51 routes. Wisconsin Avenue would have a D82 line, among others.
    • There are also 14 routes that would run 24 hours, a service that began last December.
    • Names start with "M" in Montgomery County; "P" in Prince George's County; "A" in Arlington County and Alexandria; "F" in Fairfax and Falls Church.

How it works: Submit feedback through an interactive map, survey, written comment, or attend a public hearing.

    • Public review runs through July 15th. The changes would take effect next summer.

Zoom in: Many neighborhoods will see shifting bus routes, so it's best to select specific routes online to examine them.

    • For example, in Northwest, there is a proposed D70 route from Chevy Chase to Farragut North — along with several other routes worth noting, as laid out in Forest Hills Connection .
