Recall campaigns against D.C. Council members may be a bust

The recall campaigns against two progressive D.C. Council members are facing headwinds.

Why it matters: The campaigns have not yet secured enough signatures to force a recall election against Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau , two lawmakers they criticize as soft on crime.

By the numbers: The recall Allen campaign has until Monday to turn in enough signatures, which are estimated to be in the 7,000+ range.

    • They had 5,000 signatures earlier this week, according to an email blast to supporters.

Between the lines: They came out the gate swinging in January against Allen — and had support from some Democratic strategists and fundraisers .

    • But the campaign is coming up short as their main gripe with Allen — violent crime — is down 35% citywide this year.

Meanwhile, the recall Nadeau campaign has an Oct. 1 deadline, but acknowledges challenges in reaching that goal, according to the Washington Post .

    • Even if they miss the signature requirement, "We know we did have an impact, especially in the community," the leader of the Nadeau recall told the Post.
    • The campaigns didn't return Axios' request for comment.

Supporters of the council members have outraised the recall campaigns.

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to show that the recall campaigns (not council members' supporters) didn't return Axios' request for comment.
