Commanders' FedEx Field renamed Northwest Stadium

Out: FedEx Field . In: Northwest Stadium. The Washington Commanders' stadium has a new name after the team signed a new naming rights deal with Northwest Federal Credit Union.

Why it matters: The Landover arena ranks low, sometimes worst , among NFL stadiums. But the new deal will at least be lucrative while the franchise searches for a new home.

The sponsorship runs through 2031 and is worth more than the old $7.5 million annual deal with FedEx, according to the Washington Post .

    • The credit union is headquartered in Herndon.
    • FedEx had ended its sponsorship of the stadium — a deal made in 1999 — two years early in February.

Zoom in: No timeline has been shared for when the new exterior signage will go up. The Post reports that signs will go up inside the stadium in time for the home opener against the New York Giants on Sept. 15.

    • Northwest members will get discounts on tickets and merchandise.

What we're watching: Team owner Josh Harris said this week that 2030 is a "reasonable target" for a new stadium, possibly at the RFK site in D.C .
