Colorado's unluckiest bald eagles finally raise offspring after years of heartbreak

Colorado's most famous bald eagle couple has successfully raised three healthy offspring and is on the verge of becoming empty nesters.

Why it matters: This marks a significant turnaround for the eagle pair at Standley Lake, who faced several years of heartbreak.

Flashback: In 2020, a female eagle attacked the male's mate, hijacked her nest and left her eggs unhatched. The lone eaglet that hatched was killed by a magpie.

• A cottonwood tree holding the nest split the following year, killing the only eaglet inside.
• In 2022, two eaglets died of unknown causes.
• Last year, a snowstorm knocked the nest out of the tree, and the one hatched eaglet didn't survive the fall.

What they're saying: "We are extremely proud of the bald eagle parents for having such a successful year and look forward to the winter where we get to see several adult and juvenile bald eagles stopping by at the lake," Standley Lake Regional Park officials said in a statement.

The big picture: A mated pair of bald eagles has called the northwest side of Standley Lake home since 1993. They hatched their first pair of offspring in 1996 and have successfully raised two or three eaglets nearly every year since.

What's next: The three juveniles are learning to hunt and will soon leave the reservoir to begin their journeys, officials say.
