If you want an intimate view of the Des Moines metro on your bike — this guide is for you.
Why it matters: Our area is distinct in the country for its continuous, free trail network that allows cyclists to travel 100+ miles with little vehicle traffic.
Plus, there are plenty of breweries, art and restaurants to stop by along your ride.
Driving the news: We reached out to resident DSM bike expert Kristine "Sunnie" Jimenez for her top bike routes around the metro.
Pro tip: Colby Park is a great spot to stop for water with a restroom large enough to bring your bike inside, Jimenez says. Don't let the surrounding construction deter you — the facilities are still open.
Plus: You can park and rent a BCycle bike (electric or standard) outside Campbell Park or 515 Brewing.
Why we love it: It can be hard to find elevation on Des Moines' trails, but this one makes sure your legs get some hill work, especially if you're planning on riding this year's RAGBRAI route .
Why we love it: You get to see a lot of the metro without repeating anything!
Where to stop along the way: The Proletariat is a cool bar in Perry. Nitehawk in Slater is also always good and has a large patio.
Kyle's Bikes off Oralabor is on the route, plus Naughtea nearby has delicious Korean corndogs. Main Street Cafe & Bakery is a quick, nutritious stop as well.
Pro tip: If you can do 90 miles, then surely you can do 100. Add a little bit on to this route up through Urbandale or Johnston.
