Metro pharmacies began rolling out the new COVID-19 vaccine formulas last week.

Why it matters: The new vaccines target the KP.2 variant, which has dominated cases nationwide this summer and currently accounts for about 70% of U.S. cases.

State of play: The updated vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older.

    • It is especially important for the highest-risk groups, those 65 and older or those with underlying medical conditions, per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Follow the money: COVID-19 vaccines are accessible through most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B.

    • This year's updated shots are expensive for those without insurance because the Bridge Access Program , which provided free COVID-19 vaccines for uninsured individuals, has ended.
    • Adult doses cost around $140 for private-sector customers, according to the CDC price list .

Zoom in: The federal government lists pharmacies with COVID-19 vaccine availability at Vaccines.gov .

    • Hy-Vee , Walgreens , and multiple metro medical clinics are among the locations already offering the latest vaccines.
    • Polk County Department of Health is expected to offer the updated vaccines soon, spokesperson Addie Olson tells Axios.
