We tried Des Moines' top lobster rolls

Lobster rolls were all the rage at the Iowa State Fair , but you can snag this coastal dish beyond the 11-day event.

Driving the news: We delightedly dined on lobster rolls from St. Kilda Collective , Guesthouse Tavern + Oyster , and Destination Grille to give you our thoughts.

    • As always, the food for our reviews is paid out of our pockets.

What it is: A classic Maine lobster roll with lemon aioli, celery, herbs and a buttered bun with fries on the side.

    • It's available sometimes during brunch and on Thursdays during the Valley Junction Farmers Market.

    Price: $20

💭 Thought bubble: There wasn't anything extraordinary about it, but if you're craving a classic cold lobster roll, this dish hits the spot.

    Guesthouse Tavern + Oyster

What it is: A hot, Connecticut-style lobster roll with lemon, chives, butter and a New England roll. Fries on the side.

    Price: $30

Thought bubble: This was the most expensive lobster roll, but it was also the tastiest (though it depends if you prefer hot or cold!)

    • The bun was stuffed with large, buttery chunks of lobster. On the side was an addictive lobster-infused butter that took that sweet, briny flavor to the next level.

    Destination Grille

What it is: A cold lobster stuffing with chives and charred lemon on a roll. Choice of side.

    Price: $28

Thought bubble: It's huge! It had the least lobster flavor out of all the rolls though.

    • Texturally, there were more shredded bits than meaty lobster chunks.

Iowa is not where I would EVER order a lobster roll. I am from Maine! They eat catfish here! Ugh. Not a clue how to cook real seafood. Sorry!
