How to make friends in Des Moines

As a newcomer to Iowa, it can be difficult to make friends, especially since many of us have grown up here.

Why it matters: American culture puts a heavy emphasis on romantic partnerships, but friendships are known to improve satisfaction in our lives, help us feel secure and guide us through major life changes .

Yes, but: There is good news — our local survey of Des Moines readers showed that even though most people here already have friends, they're open and ready to make more.

We chatted with Morgan Chicchelly, founder of the Des Moines Girl city guide publication, about some of her best tips for meeting your next BFF.

🏃‍♀️ Get involved: It's way easier to meet and chat with people if you have similar hobbies or are doing the same activities.

🤝 Volunteer: Helping out with local groups like One Iowa , an LGBTQ advocacy organization, and ARL of Iowa, an animal shelter.

📱 Go online: Bumble BFF is a way to find a new friend who has similar interests as you and get to know them a little bit before meeting in person.

    • "I've heard great success stories," Chicchelly says. "It's platonic dating."
    • (Our colleagues at Axios Charlotte tried it !)

Folks here are really not nice. They only want their high school friends. Iowa nice is a myth!
