Unclear when temporarily closed Capers restaurant will reopen

A much-loved northeast Detroit steak restaurant, Capers, has been closed for construction since mid-June — and it's unclear when it'll return.

Why it matters: Capers, known for its steak priced by the ounce, has been a staple on Gratiot Avenue since 1982 amid a tough, shifting restaurant industry.

The latest: Capers announced on social media June 10 that it was "temporarily under construction and closed until completion."

    • Four days later, in its most recent Facebook post , it added: "We miss y'all already! But don't worry we are coming back."

The big picture: Some longtime spots have closed in recent years as they struggle to recover from the pandemic, including the Rattlesnake Club's closure in June. The Rattlesnake cited changes in dining habits and traffic hurting revenues since the pandemic.

Capers did not respond to Axios' voicemail and messages on social media seeking comment.

    • A big yellow-and-black sign on the building still reads: "Closed — under construction — we'll see you soon."
