Target sortation center opens in Detroit

Target doesn't have a store in Detroit — the plan for a small-format location in Midtown died earlier this year — but there is now a large building in the city with Target's logo.

The big picture: Target opened a sorting center in late August at the old State Fairgrounds site to fulfill online orders and increase its next-day delivery capabilities, according to a statement.

    • The facility adds more trucking operations to a logistics complex at Woodward Avenue and 8 Mile Road, where an Amazon fulfillment center opened last year.

Driving the news: Target's new building is set up to take in packages from more than 30 local stores, sort them, batch them up and deliver them to nearby customers.

    • The retailer is among companies seeking to compete with Amazon by growing its fast delivery operations by increasing speed and lowering cost, according to market research company Emarketer .

Yes, but: We're still left wondering when more big-box retailers like Target, Walmart and Kroger will invest in brick-and-mortar locations in the city.
