The Cockrell Butterfly Center reopened Saturday after being closed for maintenance for two months.

Why it matters: The center now has birds to add to the rainforest atmosphere, director Lauren Davidson said.

Driving the news: The Cockrell Center, part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, added about 10 birds, including small finches and an Alexandrine parakeet.

    • It also still has its resident iguana and tortoises.

Fun fact: The center has about 1,500 to 2,000 butterflies, with 60 species from tropical regions.

    • Every day, the center releases 10 to 200 butterflies into the habitat.

If you go: You can also release newly emerged butterflies into the conservatory as part of the museum's Flight School for an additional $15.

The center is $12 on top of $25 general admission for adults. The museum has free admission hours on Tuesdays .
