Miami Beach swears in female fire chief. A first for Miami-Dade County

The first female fire chief in Miami-Dade County history was sworn into command yesterday.

Chief Digna Abello, a 19-year veteran of the Miami beach Fire Department, was honored during a change-of-command ceremony after officially being appointed in June .

Catch up quick: Abello assumes the role from the retiring Chief Virgil Fernandez.

The Barry University graduate previously served as a lieutenant, division chief and deputy chief of administration.
