Thursday is Election Day . Polls are open 7am-7pm.

Why it matters: Voters will select candidates to represent Tennessee in Congress and at the state Capitol. Local races for school board and other offices are also on the ballot.

State of play: One of the high-profile races playing out Thursday is the Republican primary in Tennessee's 5th Congressional District, which pits incumbent Rep. Andy Ogles against Metro Councilmember Courtney Johnston.

Between the lines: This is just the second election in the newly redrawn District 5, which represents a large portion of Nashville, where Johnston lives, as well as Ogles' home in Maury County.

    • District 5 previously represented all of Nashville, but Republican lawmakers reshaped it during redistricting to include a large portion of rural Middle Tennessee, giving Republican candidates an advantage.

Zoom out: The Democratic ballot includes the statewide primary for the U.S. Senate, which will determine which candidate will go up against Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn in November.

    • State Rep. Gloria Johnson, who got national attention last year as a member of the so-called "Tennessee Three," is running. So is Marquita Bradshaw, who ran against Republican Sen. Bill Hagerty in 2020.

What we're watching: Statehouse primaries across Tennessee could shape the ongoing debate over statewide school vouchers. Gov. Bill Lee has endorsed pro-voucher candidates in some Republican primaries, and outside groups are helping to fund those campaigns.

Go deeper: Our election guide highlights other state and local races on the ballot.

Don't forget: You must vote at your designated polling place on Election Day, which you can find online .
