Titans trade for linebacker, release former top draft choice at NFL roster cut deadline

Titans general manager Ran Carthon traded for a starting linebacker and released a former first-round pick in a flurry of moves as the team trimmed its roster to 53 players Tuesday.

Why it matters: Carthon traded for Rams linebacker Ernest Jones IV, adding yet another accomplished veteran to the Titans defense.

The big picture: Earlier this offseason, the team acquired L'Jarius Sneed, Chidobe Awuzie, Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs to bolster the secondary.

    • Prior to trading for Jones, Carthon signed free agent linebacker Kenneth Murray.
    • Jones was a team captain for the Rams. He registered 145 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season.

Between the lines: The release of Caleb Farley ends his disappointing tenure in Tennessee.

    • The cornerback played in just 12 games after the Titans took him with the 22nd pick in the 2021 draft. He missed all of last season while recovering from injury.

The intrigue: Carthon also traded reserve quarterback Malik Willis, a former third-round pick, to the Green Bay Packers.

    • That means the Titans will go into the regular season with Will Levis and Mason Rudolph as the only quarterbacks on the 53-player roster.
    • The trade shows how much can change in one year in the NFL. A year ago, Levis and Willis competed for the backup quarterback job behind Ryan Tannehill. Now, Levis is viewed as a building block and Willis was traded for seventh-round selection in next year's draft.

State of play: Veteran Nick Folk won the kicking job, beating out rookie Brayden Narveson , who was released after a strong preseason.

    • If you're a sucker for underdog stories, tight end Thomas Odukoya is the Titan for you. Odukoya, who is from the Netherlands, was waived twice by the Titans in the last two years, but he made the team this season.

By the numbers: Sports betting websites have relatively low expectations for the Titans this season.
