Text phishing scams are targeting Pennsylvania voters

Pennsylvania election officials are warning residents to be wary of political phishing scams that have targeted voters in Philadelphia's suburbs.

Why it matters: With Pennsylvania being a key battleground state, officials expect to see an uptick in those scams in the weeks leading up to the November election.

Driving the news: Voters in some of Philadelphia's collar counties have been bombarded with emails or text messages about their voting status, including that their primary votes weren't counted because of issues with their mail-in ballots, election officials told the Inquirer .

    • In Bucks County, some messages directed people to resolve their issues by calling a fake number.

What they're saying: County election officials say it is unclear who's behind the messages, but people should ignore them and not call any of the numbers or click on the links that are provided.

    • The Pennsylvania Department of State says it never sends voters information about their specific voting record.

To check your voter registration status , visit the Department of State website , contact your county elections office or call 1-877-VOTESPA.
