Nearly 2 million adult Arizonans are struggling to pay for living expenses, according to the latest Census data.

Why it matters: The rising cost of living will likely be a factor Arizona voters consider when casting their presidential votes this November.

By the numbers: Nearly 40% of Arizona's adults are in households that found it somewhat or very difficult to pay for typical expenses between late June and late July, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey.

    • That's higher than the national average of 37.4%

The intrigue: The Phoenix metro region tracked closer to the national average, with 37.1% of adults struggling to make ends meet.

    • This illustrates the economic divide between the rural and urban portions of the state.

Zoom out: Mississippi (49.5%), Alabama (45.5%) and West Virginia (43.5%) have the highest percentage of adults who say they're having trouble affording their basic needs.

    • Washington, D.C. (19.3%); Vermont (26.4%) and Minnesota (27.4%) have the fewest residents reporting such difficulties.
