NC State's Randy Woodson will step down next year

After nearly 15 years at the helm of N.C. State, Chancellor Randy Woodson will step down at the end of the 2024-25 school year, he announced Thursday.

Why it matters: Woodson's departure comes as the UNC system faces chancellor vacancies at three other universities: UNC-Chapel Hill , Appalachian State University and Elizabeth City State University, the Assembly reports .

• In May, that number was five, when N.C. A&T, North Carolina Central University, and Winston-Salem State University were also searching for new chancellors. (Former Elizabeth City State University Chancellor Karrie Dixon now leads NCCU.)

Flashback: The UNC system granted Woodson, 67, a contract extension in 2021 that allows him to serve through 2025.

• UNC system president Peter Hans "twisted his arm at the time to stay," Hans said, per the Associated Press .
• With his contract set to expire next June, Woodson said it was "just a good time" to go, according to AP.

The intrigue: Woodson's more than 14-year tenure is far longer than the average 5.9 years for university leadership .

What they're saying: "Under Chancellor Woodson's visionary leadership, North Carolina State University has transformed into one of our nation's preeminent public research universities," U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis said in a statement Thursday.

What's next: N.C. State Board of Trustees vice chair and university alumnus Ed Stack will chair a 13-member search advisory committee.
