Speed cameras are coming to nine more Richmond school zones

Speed enforcement cameras are slated to go live Monday around nine additional Richmond school zones.

Why it matters: After a 30-day grace period, the cameras will automatically issue $50-$100 fines to drivers going 11 miles per hour or more over the speed limit during school hours.

The big picture: Speed enforcement cameras were added around two Richmond schools — Northside's Linwood Holton Elementary School and Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts in South Richmond — for the first time in the spring as part of the city's broader initiative to make local streets safer.

    • The city announced it was installing additional cameras around nine more school zones last week with the hope to have those live on Monday, the first day of school.

    Zoom in: Those locations are:

    • Mary Munford Elementary in the Near West End
    • Frances W. McClenney Elementary in Northside
    • Martin Luther King Middle in the East End
    • Huguenot High — and the rest — are in South Richmond
    • Swansboro Elementary
    • Thomas C. Boushall Middle
    • Westover Hills Elementary
    • Lucille Brown Middle
    • River City Middle

How it works: The cameras are operational only when school is in session from 7:15-9:15am and from 2:15-4:15pm.

    • Warning signs alert drivers that speed enforcement is taking place.
    • Fines are issued for drivers around going 11 miles or more over the limit (so 36MPH).
    • Fines are $50 for the first violations, $100 thereafter.

What we're watching: The city said plans call for installing the next round of cameras around Richmond Technical School of the Arts (formerly George Wythe) and Thomas Jefferson High School.
