    Log Haven restaurant in Salt Lake wins a historic preservation grant

    Log Haven restaurant in Millcreek Canyon is one of 50 historic U.S. eateries to receive a $50,000 grant for preservation.

    Driving the news: The National Trust for Historic Preservation teamed up with American Express to award $50,000 grants to small restaurants "that operate in historic buildings or neighborhoods and provide cultural significance to their communities through their history, cuisine, and locations."

    • Winners will use the funds to "upgrade, renovate and grow," per Monday's announcement.

    Flashback: Log Haven 's cabin was built by coal and steel baron L.F. Rains in 1920 as an anniversary gift for his wife. He shipped the logs from Oregon and hired Swedish woodworkers to build the house.

    • It became a restaurant and event center in the 1950s. The same family has owned it since the 1990s.
