What to expect at Mar | Muntanya's "Chef's Garden Table"

Time is running out to snag a seat at the Chef's Garden Table — Mar | Muntanya's new weekly prix fixe dining event in downtown Salt Lake City.

How it works: 10 people gather on the roof of the Hyatt Regency for a surprise menu largely driven by whatever chef Tyson Peterson finds at the farmer's market that day.

    • He and his staff prepare the meal on the roof with the guests like a fancy cookout.

My thought bubble: My husband booked seats for our anniversary — and it was one of the best prix fixe events I've been to in Utah.

    • Peterson explained his thought process in the recipes he devised, which made each of the nine courses far more interesting to taste.

The intrigue: Reservations are only available to parties of two or four — so you're sharing the table with strangers.

    • The goal is to give diners a chance to socialize with fellow foodies, general manager Eric Bergstrom told us.

Price: Tickets are $150 a person — which is a good value considering one of our courses was a generous serving of A5-grade Japanese wagyu beef .

What's next: The weekly dinners are scheduled through mid-September — but only a few seats remain.

What we're watching: Whether more fine dining restaurants will devote this level of time and resources to small group experiences — especially with fall's delicious flavors about to ripen.
