Sunset Night Market returns this weekend

The Sunset Night Market is back on Friday following a successful run last fall.

Driving the news: The market , which aims to celebrate the food, culture and community that shapes the neighborhood and the city, will feature more than 50 food vendors and over 100 retail and art vendors.

    • There will also be live music, activities for kids, a tofu-eating contest and more across seven blocks in the Sunset.
    • The event, which will be double the size from last year, runs 5-10pm on Irving Street between 19th and 26th avenues.

Flashback: Last fall's night market attracted more than 10,000 attendees, according to organizers.

    • The pilot market was spearheaded by District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio, who was inspired by the famous Raohe Night Market in Taipei.
    • "I felt we needed to bring this experience to San Francisco and Irving Street in the Sunset was the perfect place for it," Engardio wrote on his website in June.

What's next: Friday's event is free to attend but if you can't make it, there will be another this fall: on Sept. 27, again on Irving Street.

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to show the night market is on Friday, not Saturday.
