Florida voters want abortion access, weed and Donald Trump, poll shows

A new survey of Florida voters shows over 60% support for Democrat-backed measures to broaden access to abortion and marijuana while Donald Trump still leads the presidential race.

Why it matters: The results square with Florida's history of voting for Republican leaders while also approving more progressive causes.

By the numbers: The poll , from the University of North Florida's Public Opinion Research lab, surveyed 774 Florida voters from July 24 through Saturday. (The margin of error is ± 4.6 percentage points.)

    • About half (49%) of respondents said they'd vote for Trump if the election were held today, while 42% said they'd vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.
    • A constitutional amendment broadening abortion access had the most support among respondents at 69%.
    • Another proposed amendment to legalize recreational marijuana got about 64%. Both measures need 60% to pass.

The intrigue: The poll comes as Florida Democrats, who view the ballot measures as key to their November chances , have reported a spike in volunteer enthusiasm.

The bottom line: While abortion referenda in other states have helped Democrats win sweeping victories, Floridians tend to go their own way .
