Corcoran's high New College salary tees USF president up for raise

University of South Florida president Rhea Law could see a raise of up to $342,500 — thanks, in part, to New College of Florida and its conservative makeover.

Why it matters: New College is a much smaller institution than USF, but its president, Richard Corcoran , makes much more than Law.

Driving the news: A board of trustees committee referenced the liberal arts college while it discussed Law's compensation package, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

    • "Taking nothing away from the complexity of [New College], I think we can all agree that the scope and scale of the University of South Florida is quite a bit larger," said USF general counsel Gerard Solis.
    • Corcoran earned almost $700,000 in base salary and $1.09 million in total compensation. Meanwhile, Law's base is $655,000 and around $955,000 in total.

State of pay: The committee approved a raise in Law's base to $825,000 per year and an increase in her performance pay cap from $300,000 to $412,500.

    • The proposed bump is meant to keep her compensation in line with that of other Florida university presidents, according to the Times.

What's next: It goes befor e the full board for approval in September.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect corrected details from the Tampa Bay Times regarding USF president Rhea Law's base salary, before and after a proposed raise.
