Updated COVID shots will soon land in the Twin Cities.

Why it matters: This summer's surge reminded us COVID isn't going anywhere . The vaccines can boost immunity and provide protection against more severe illness.

Driving the news: The Food and Drug Administration approved new formulations of both Moderna and the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines last week.

    • CDC advisers have recommended that people 6 months and older get the updated vaccines when they become available.

Threat level: Recent wastewater surveillance data shows "very high" viral activity levels in Minnesota, per the CDC.

Between the lines : The share of Minnesotans considered up to date on their shots and boosters has dropped significantly from early in the pandemic.

    • As of March 31, just one in four adults had received at least one dose of the 2023-24 formula COVID-19 shot, per the CDC . The rate for kids is closer to 10%

What they're saying: Public health experts say getting the latest jab can boost waning immunity from prior infections or shots and provide more protection against the latest versions of the virus.

What to expect: Updated vaccine supplies should arrive at local pharmacies and doctors' offices in the coming weeks.

What we're watching: The federal government also plans to relaunch its free COVID-19 home testing program ahead of the fall cold and virus season.
