A faulty air conditioner motor caused a minor fire that sent smoke into a classroom at a Buckeye school on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Buckeye Fire Department.

At about 3:50 p.m., firefighters from Buckeye Fire Medical Rescue Department, Goodyear, Arizona Fire and Medical Authority and Tolleson responded to an active fire at a freestanding modular classroom at Sundance Elementary School, according to Rayne Gray, assistant fire chief for Buckeye Fire Department.

Fire crews searched the school building near Watson and Yuma roads. They found it empty, determining that a faulty air conditioner motor was causing the building to fill with smoke, with no significant fire occurring in the classroom.

At about 4:30 p.m., Gray said crews had contained any overheated parts and were wrapping up the scene.

There were no children or staff from the school near the building when smoke filled the area. Gray added that no one was injured.

The Buckeye Fire Marshal was on the scene to conduct an investigation.
