Phoenix police released security and body camera footage on Friday from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on August 10. In the incident, officers shot and killed 46-year-old Imani Jackson after he allegedly fired a gun near a group of people and attempted to flee from police.

At about 3:35 a.m., Phoenix police first received reports of a man, later identified as Jackson, firing multiple gunshots near 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

According to Phoenix police Sgt. Rob Scherer, 911 callers reported the shooter driving a white Ford Explorer, which was later identified as matching the description of Jackson's vehicle.

Security camera footage from the area reportedly connected Jackson to the initial gunshots, showing him driving alongside a group of people near a dimly lit building.

Jackson is seen exiting his vehicle and interacting with someone before allegedly pointing a gun at a person and firing, prompting some members of the group, including a dog, to flee.

Witnesses at the scene informed police that Jackson had threatened them with a handgun before fleeing in his vehicle, according to Sgt. Scherer.

    Police fire five shots

About one mile away near 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road, Phoenix police located a vehicle in a parking lot resembling Jackson's, leading officers to conduct a traffic stop.

Body worn camera from the two officers that pulled Jackson over showed him exit his vehicle with his hands up despite police orders to stay in his vehicle. Jackson, still with his hands in the air, proceeded to walk in the opposite direction of police before engaging in a brief foot pursuit.

Police are seen hesitating in the body camera footage when Jackson allegedly reached towards his waistband for a handgun, according to Scherer. Police then fired five shots fired at Jackson, as seen in the body camera footage.

Police are seen scrambling to take cover behind a backup police vehicle. "Chill out! Chill out! Get behind the car," shouts one of the officers moments after shots were fired.

"Everyone slow down," another officer shouts as a handgun mounted flashlight illuminates Jackson's motionless body on the edge of the sidewalk.

Scherer said Jackson was detained and died at the scene, but the body camera footage did not depict anything beyond the officer involved shooting.

Police located a handgun in the yard next to where Jackson was shot and forensically linked the gun to the shooting incident earlier near 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road, according to Scherer

"The officers involved in this shooting are both assigned to the South Mountain Precinct and have approximately one and a half and three and a half years of service with the department respectively," said Scherer.

The shooting was subject of an internal Phoenix police investigation and a separate criminal investigation by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
