Let's talk water with CAWCD candidates, but not in some stodgy debate

Morning. In today’s opinions newsletter : An upcoming election forum, plus Kamala Harris’ next trip to Arizona and a ballot measure to boost legislative oversight.

The Central Arizona Water Conservation District is responsible for delivering Colorado River water to cities and tribes in metro Phoenix, Pinal County and Tucson. And it’s facing some existential questions in the next few years.

We’ll delve deeper into them during an upcoming candidate forum in which all six candidates have agreed to participate.

Why a forum and not a debate?

Because these are complex issues. And — let’s face it — ensuring that water from a drying river continues to flow to taps isn’t exactly the stuff of neat, one-minute soundbites and 30-second rebuttals.

Or it shouldn’t be, at least.

We’ll record the informal conversation with candidates, but I hope you’ll consider attending in person. There will be time to ask questions, and I mean, how often is that allowed in a debate? (Btw, what do you want to know? Send us your questions for the candidates.)

The forum is 6-7 p.m. Oct. 8 at Arizona State University’s Walton Center for Planetary Health , 777 E. University Drive in Tempe. And best of all, it’s free!
