Cardinals defensive lineman Justin Jones out for season with triceps tear

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Justin Jones has been placed on injured reserve and is out for the season, head coach Jonathan Gannon announced Wednesday. Jones suffered a triceps tear in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Lions and did not return.

The Cardinals signed Jones to a three-year, $30.1 million deal in the offseason to shore up a weak interior defensive line. He led that unit in snaps in each of the first two weeks.

“We'll figure it out,” Gannon said. “Lost a good player.”

Jones finished his season having played 100 snaps. He recorded three pressures and three tackles, including one tackle for loss. Per Pro Football Focus, he has been the Cardinals’ worst defensive player, with a 30.2 overall grade.

In Jones’ absence, the Cardinals signed Naquan Jones. Jones played 67 snaps for the Cardinals last season but did not make the team out of training camp and signed with the Dolphins practice squad.

The Cardinals will also rely more heavily on their existing stable of defensive tackles: Bilal Nichols, Roy Lopez, L.J. Collier, Dante Stills, and Khyiris Tonga. First-round rookie Darius Robinson (calf) is eligible to return from injured reserve in Week 5 against San Francisco.

In other injury news, tight end Trey McBride remains in concussion protocol. At right tackle, backup Jackson Barton is “day to day” with a toe injury, while Gannon did not provide much of an update on starter Jonah Williams, who went on injured reserve with a knee injury after Week 1.

Gannon said Williams is “doing well.” He was then asked whether that means Williams will return this season.

“We'll see,” Gannon said. “Hypotheticals. I don't know.”
