Student in hospital after being stabbed at Navajo Nation high school

Navajo Nation police arrested a Window Rock High School student Friday after another student was stabbed during a fight in a bathroom.

The victim was being treated at a local hospital with a "puncture wound to the chest region" following the stabbing incident at about 9:20 a.m., Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren wrote in a Facebook post .

The 16-year-old boy's injuries were described as "serious but not life-threatening," Nygren wrote in a post around 3:30 p.m. Arizona time. The 17-year-old suspected assailant will be transferred to the Crownpoint District Adult and Juvenile Facility, he added.

"My wife and I stand in solidarity with the community against any senseless violence in our schools," Nygren wrote. "Our thoughts are with those impacted and with our students."

The Navajo Nation Police Department and Shannon Goodsell, superintendent of Window Rock Unified School District #8, gave initial details of the incident earlier in the day in their own Facebook posts.

Attempts to reach both a police representative and Goodsell for comment were unsuccessful. A police Facebook post at about 12:30 p.m. Arizona time indicated that the incident was not connected to earlier school threats. Earlier in the week, Navajo police had investigated anonymous, non-credible threats on social media regarding potential school shootings, according to previous police posts.

Friday's incident triggered a soft" lockdown of the school in Fort Defiance, which was kept open for the day until parents could "check out their children from the school," the post said.

Goodsell praised first responders, school personnel, students and parents in his own Facebook post.

High school personnel and students "diligently followed all safety procedures and protocols once the incident was discovered," he wrote. "How they handled today made me very proud. Go Scouts!"

The arrested student "is currently in NNPD custody, awaiting formal charges," Goodsell wrote.
