Kevin Durant addresses contract extension situation with Phoenix Suns

Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant addressed his contract situation during Monday’s media day as the NBA’s eighth all-time leading scorer is eligible for a one-year extension of $59.7 million he’d receive for the 2026-27 season.

“I got two years left on my contract," Durant said, a day after he turned 36 years old. "I'm focused on being the best I can every day in the moment. We'll figure out that stuff when it's time."

Durant became eligible to sign the extension on July 12 and would have until Oct. 21 to sign it.

“Everyone talks about Kevin, Kevin loves it here," Suns team owner Mat Ishbia said Monday. "We love Kevin Durant. We talk to him and his agent, Rich Kleiman, all the time. We don't really go through contract extensions publicly, but I'll tell you this. Kevin loves it. We love Kevin. We plan on Kevin being here. Nothing is changing with that."

Phoenix can only offer a one-year max extension due to the "over-38 rule,'' which places limits on contracts of at least four years for a player who would be at least 38 years old during that contract.

“We love having KD here," Suns general manager James Jones said. "We want him here. We'll figure that out. Like Mat said, we don't really talk about that publicly, but the thing we do talk about publicly is who really wants to be here and who is a great fit for us. So we love KD, he loves being here. That goes without saying."

Durant’s current four-year contract for $194 million ends in 2025-26 and he will become an unrestricted free agent. Phoenix already has the NBA's highest payroll as they are over the second tax apron.

Durant's extension would hit in 2026-27, when Devin Booker will be in the third year of his four-year, $224-million deal and due $57 million that season.

Bradley Beal will have a player option that season in his five-year, $251-million deal. He'll be due $57.1 million that season. Beal has a no-trade clause.
